About

Welcome to the 2010 Mapalo Wine and Cheese Website!
An evening of engaging conversations, excellent entertainment, delicious deserts, and succulent wine. All in support of our overseas work. The only thing missing is you...

As a Canadian non-profit organization, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is committed to building a world of opportunity for rural Sub-Saharan Africans. EWB partners with on the ground organizations in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, and Zambia to develop and enact effective, efficient, and innovative solutions to international development issues such as water and sanitation, food production and agricultural methods. The University of Calgary Chapter is a group of passionate students with a strong commitment to fostering global citizenship within Canada by raising awareness of global issues and challenging Canadians to think critically about how their actions can impact developing nations.

Each year our chapter is able to send one or two volunteers overseas to contribute to EWB international development efforts through what is called the Junior Fellowship Program. This year we are hosting a Wine and Cheese Fund-Raiser to contribute to sending two volunteers overseas. We are also hoping that this event will highlight the importance of international development to the Calgary community by presenting Calagarians an opportunity to connect with our chapter and volunteers. We are hoping to attract professors, professionals, and students to this event.

A word from our future Junior Fellows Jessica and Chelsea

Hello! My name is Jessica Lam, and in exactly four months I will be heading to Africa, Southern Africa to be exact! I am so excited and nervous about preparing for and going overseas. I think a lot of this has to do with how much I care about helping others as well as being a good representative for my fellow students/chapter members/friends at the University of Calgary. I have been involved with Engineers without Borders (EWB) for the past one and half years because I support who we are working for: smart and hardworking people who only lack opportunity. I feel so privileged that I am going to be able to work, in person, with the amazing champions and leaders in Southern Africa. I hope to be able to come back and share with you the stories about new friends I meet, the new things I learn and the inspiration from the people I work with.

Dream big, work hard! Hi everyone, Im Chelsea and this summer I will be working with Engineers Without Borders in Burkina Faso as a Junior Fellow, or JF. Preparing to be a successful JF has been an intense journey so far, and Ive just gotten started! Im looking forward to much more learning in the coming months, about myself, EWB, Burkina Faso and about development in general. While part of the responsibility of a JF lies in the preparation, another huge part involves being able to share my learnings with my group, as well as being able to apply those lessons overseas. 'It is the combination of building knowledge and skills for the JFs themselves, for the chapter, and for the overseas partners that makes the Junior Fellowship program so exciting and so important in my eyes. I cant wait to get to Burkina and start meeting the people I will be working with over the summer! I stand to learn so much, and I want to absorb as much as I can so that I can share all that I learn with my chapter and with my community when I return. In keeping with our Engineers Without Borders values, I am dreaming BIG about what is possible this summer in Burkina, and I am going to work hard to make those dreams a reality!
